Service Learning

Service learning at ACDS is a thoughtful program of investigation, planning, action, and reflection that allows students and teachers to address authentic community needs while deepening their understanding of the world around them.  Each grade chooses a theme for the year and begins with an “investigation” stage where they research community needs related to their theme. As they develop and implement their plans for action, the students share their learning with each other and the community at large.  In addition to these thoughtful and comprehensive student-led projects, there is an all-school half-day of service in November, service activities on World Food Day, and an all-school day of service in April.  Middle Schoolers also have the opportunity to participate in a service learning club.

Eighth graders work alongside their kindergarten and first grade buddies at Arcadia Farm.

Sixth graders unload pumpkins for Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill’s sale.

A third grader stocks shelves at Lutheran Social Service’s Resource Center.

Service Learning Club members do some gardening at Alexandria Adult Day Services Center.

Second and fifth graders assemble birthday boxes for Alive!.

Eighth graders seal packaged meals for Rise Against Hunger. Our entire school works together to package 20,000 meals annually.

Sixth graders pack weekender bags at Community Lodging.
